**APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2023/2024 SCHOOL YEAR HAVE CLOSED.

Visiting artists for the first semester include Farah Al Qasimi, Daniel Arnold, Elliott Jerome Brown Jr. and Rachel Stern. Guest critics will include Eve Lyons and Shala Miller. The semester also features a field trip to the late photographer Mary Ellen Mark’s SoHo studio.

12/9 - Final Critique

Classes meet on Saturdays so people with regular jobs may attend. Each class consists of a 1 hour visiting artist lecture followed by a 3 hour critique of student work, 12pm — 4pm. The program will consist of 10 Saturdays between September 2023 and August 2024, with additional optional field trips. The program is ideal for students who would like to undertake a long-term project in an environment of critical feedback, are working towards an exhibition or book, planning applications to MFA programs, or any student who may be interested in disseminating their photographs publicly.

Provost Matthew Leifheit is an American photographer, magazine editor, and professor. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design and the Yale School of Art, Leifheit is Editor-in-Chief of MATTE Magazine, the journal of emerging photography he has edited and published since 2010. Leifheit is currently on faculty at Yale University, Pratt Institute, and the MATTE Institute.

The MATTE Institute is a fiscally sponsored project of The Watermill Center, a laboratory of inspiration and performance founded by theater and visual artist Robert Wilson.
